Plastic Laminate

Plastic Laminate Counters

Plastic laminate—This material is widely used for countertops, cabinets, and furniture. In fact, it’s used nearly anywhere a non-porous, durable, smooth surface is needed. However, it has two disadvantages. First, under high heat, it will scorch, or even blister and crack. Second, it can chip if you drop something sharp or heavy on it.

Small chips can be repaired with commercial compounds made for that purpose. Your building materials dealer will have several recommendations. Larger damaged areas must be replaced.

Use care when using high-gloss finishes for countertops. They show every finger mark and water spot. Also, light reflecting off them can be annoying. Consider using a matte finish instead.
